When parents think about their child's education, the brain is central to every conversation. Grades. Concentration. Memory. Learning pace. These are the things that keep parents up at night and drive school decisions.
What most parents do not realise is that one of the most powerful things affecting every single one of those outcomes is not happening in the classroom at all. It is happening on the school playground.
The relationship between physical activity and brain development in children is one of the most consistently supported findings in modern neuroscience. And yet, in most Indian schools, PE is still treated as a break from the real work rather than a direct contributor to it.
This blog is about why that needs to change, and what the science actually says.
The Neuroscience, Without the Jargon
You do not need to be a scientist to understand how physical activity affects the brain. The basics are actually quite straightforward.
When a child runs, jumps, or plays a structured sport, their heart rate rises, and blood flow to the brain increases. That increased blood flow delivers more oxygen and glucose, the two things the brain needs most to function well. But the effects go much deeper than this temporary boost.
Regular physical activity leads to structural adaptations in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that is the main centre of learning and memory. A 2024 systematic review in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Physiology confirmed that regular physical activity causes real, measurable changes in how this part of the brain develops in children.
Think about what that means practically. The hippocampus is where information gets consolidated into long-term memory. It is where a child retains what their teacher taught in the morning, or recalls a concept during an exam. Regular physical activity literally shapes this structure, making it more capable, more connected, more efficient.
Physical activity also increases the brain's production of a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). Researchers sometimes call it fertiliser for the brain. It helps new brain cells grow and strengthens the connections between existing ones. The more physically active a child is, the more of this their brain produces.
The Four Brain Functions PE Directly Improves
A November 2025 narrative review published in the journal Brain Sciences, which analysed studies from PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science up to August 2025, identified four specific executive functions that are consistently improved by regular physical activity in children:

1. Inhibitory Control The ability to stop an impulse, resist distraction, and focus on the task at hand. Children with stronger inhibitory control follow instructions better, stay on task longer, and manage their behaviour in class more effectively. |
3. Cognitive Flexibility The ability to shift between tasks, adapt to new information, and think about problems from different angles. This is the skill behind creativity, problem-solving and adapting when plans change, all deeply tied to regular physical activity. |

2. Working Memory The ability to hold information in mind and use it. When a child follows multi-step instructions, does mental arithmetic, or tracks a conversation, working memory is what makes that possible. Physical activity has been shown to strengthen it. |
4. Attention and Focus Perhaps the most immediately visible benefit is for parents and teachers. Physically active children consistently demonstrate better sustained attention in class, and research confirms that even a single session of physical activity improves attention scores in the hours that follow. |
These are not peripheral skills. They are the foundational cognitive capacities on which all academic learning depends. A child who cannot hold focus, manage impulses, or retain information in working memory will struggle in every subject, not because they lack intelligence, but because the brain infrastructure that supports learning has not been adequately developed.
What Happens When Physical Activity Is Missing
The flip side of this research is equally important, and far less discussed.
When children do not get enough physical activity, the brain does not develop the same way. The hippocampus grows less. BDNF production is lower. Executive functions develop more slowly. And the effects show up in ways that parents often attribute to other causes, such as attention problems, difficulty concentrating, poor memory, emotional dysregulation, and anxiety.

That five per cent number is striking. If you took a similar approach to any academic subject, giving it five per cent of the school day, we would consider it a crisis. But physical activity, which directly supports the brain's ability to absorb everything else being taught, is getting exactly that allocation in most schools.
A study published in the International Journal of Physical Education, Fitness and Sports looked specifically at Indian schools, comparing students who had PE as a compulsory subject against those who did not. The students with structured PE showed significantly better academic performance in core subjects. Not marginally. Significantly.
Available evidence consistently shows that mathematics and reading are the academic subjects most influenced by physical activity, precisely because both depend on executive function and working memory, which physical activity directly strengthens. (National Academies of Sciences, USA)
The Mental Health Connection Parents Are Missing
Beyond academics, physical activity and brain development are deeply connected to children's emotional health, and this is an area where the evidence is particularly strong.
Regular physical activity triggers the release of endorphins and serotonin, neurotransmitters that regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and create a general sense of well-being. A 2024 paper in ScienceDirect specifically studied how physical activity promotes brain development through serotonin in early childhood, and found that moderate to high intensity activity is significantly associated with emotional well-being and lower anxiety in children.
For parents watching their children navigate exam pressure, peer relationships, and the emotional turbulence of growing up, this matters enormously. Physically active children are not just fitter. They are more emotionally regulated, more resilient, and better equipped to handle stress. These are not soft benefits. They are neurological ones.

So What Does This Mean for Schools?
For school principals, the case here is not about making children healthier as an act of charity. It is about understanding that physical education is an academic investment, one that pays dividends in concentration, memory, emotional stability, and ultimately, results.
A school that has a well-structured, curriculum-based PE program is not sacrificing academic time for sport. It is investing that time in the cognitive infrastructure that makes academic learning possible.
The WHO's review of physical activity and academic achievement concluded clearly: increasing physical activity has a positive impact not only on children's health but also on their classroom performance. This is not a trade-off. It is a multiplier.
